*good day*

celebratory malt

Two good things to tell you.

1. Today I picked up my diploma. It was in the Registrar's office in the basement. "Pomp and Circumstance" played just for me (really) as other students picked up their transcripts and employees typed away at their desks. Such a surreal moment. All said, I'm glad to have it in my hands.

2. I got a job!!! I feel very relieved and excited. The exclamation points could go on for pages. I start next week as a publishing assistant with a small-but-growing company. Thanks for all of your encouragement here. I thought of your kind words before each interview. It made things easier knowing that you all believed in me. (Cheesy, but true.) Thank you, thank you.

lately...

Hello. How are you these days? It feels like ages since I've stopped here for a chat. No worries. Soon I will be back in full force because I am nearly done with school. I feel like an eek! would be appropriate but I don't want to squeal in your ear. Just know that I am so excited to be finishing my grad program in two weeks.

There are also some cringing yikes! thoughts going on right now as I try to figure out my next move. I've always been a person with a plan, and now I'm flying by the seat of my pants. People keep asking what I'm going to do and all I've got for them is: Get a job. Preferably one that I enjoy. I am open to suggestions.

This is my life lately: I've been fortifying myself with cups of tea and coffee, filling my belly with husband-made meals (he's wonderful), sneaking in some knitting time, taking breaks at night to watch silly movies, and of course, reading/writing/worrying about school. I printed out this list to keep from stressing too much. I've promised myself there will be a bubble bath and new knitting needles at the end of all this paper-writing.

What have you been up to lately? I would love to hear.

Late Night Snack

This cinnamon-spiked hot cocoa and clementine helped me get through a paper-writing crunch tonight. I love the combination of chocolate and citrus. Plus, that monkey with a yo-yo cracks me up!

My mom has fond childhood memories of snacking on peanut butter and sweet pickle sandwiches washed down with a glass of chocolate milk before bed.

What's your favorite late night snack?

this moment: walking to the bus stop

[Because sometimes I need to use words to remember a particular moment]

Breaths of cool morning air fill my nostrils with the scent of summer's end. It smells bittersweet--green leaves and cut grass mix with the exhaust from yellow school buses, scrubbed clean like the kids on it, ready for the first days of a new school year.

Acorns lay scattered on the sidewalk, still green. Gray squirrels shake a new shower of them down every few minutes. I dodge the storm and quicken my pace.

The light and shadows keep my attention. My eyes follow the changes in the dappled gray and gold; leafy shadows cross my path with the breeze. The iron fence casts a railroad track onto the concrete in front of me. I walk the tracks, a morning adventure that reminds me of the childhood magic of placing a coin on a hot rail, then returning hours later to find a flat oval slick of metal, an old President's head just barely discernable. I think of high school days spent with my nose buried in books about tramping across the country, my mind filled with dreams of traveling light, train-hopping, and living simply.

The tracks end abruptly in the shade of a tall beech tree. The contrasting layers of its bark, swirls and rounds of gray, white, and green, look like a topographic map. The world on a tree. It feels rough beneath my trolling fingers. I keep moving.

At the corner I stop. I like the certainty of the bus stop. Stand here, sooner or later, something will happen. I wait, taking in the stillness after my brisk walk. The bus with its fumes, its crowded passengers, and its old driver will soon arrive, and though I am anxious to start the day, this pause at the bus stop feels right. It's funny, but even though I know the passing traffic is filling the intersection with honks and humming, what I hear is quiet.

Fall Fever

I've got fall fever bad. I just didn't have a name for it until last week when I opened the newspaper to this comic. It seems like this guy is on to something...

Today is my first day back to school and work, and I'm ready to get into the groove of a routine. I'm ready to spend my evenings with a cup of hot tea, a book, and an open window. My hands are ready to get tangled up in wool yarn while making Christmas presents. My feet are ready to crunch fallen leaves on my neighborhood walks. My arms are ready for cardigans again. I want to shiver in the cool, smoky autumn air and then throw on a sweater for that delicious feeling of warmth and comfort. I'm ready to wear jeans and socks again.

I want to eat soup. I want to go to fall festivals and come home toting bags of apples. I want to bake with lots of cinnamon. I wouldn't mind a frost. I'm ready for hot, humid days to be just a memory.

I'm ready for fall. Hurry up and get here!

Stone + Leaf + Grass = Ephemeral Art

On Thursday I took a few minutes before class to mosey around campus. The weather was cool--a pleasant break from the warm-as-an-oven library. Before I knew it, I had found a beautiful stone, smooth and oval-shaped. It felt so comforting in my hand. Then I came across a bush full of deep crimson leaves, so I picked one to keep my  gray stone company. When pines needles wouldn't hold the stone and leaf together, I tied a long piece of grass around the two.

I plunked this little bit of nature art down on the corner of my desk to keep me calm and happy all throughout class.

Much to my surprise, it started some really cool conversations with the people sitting around me. One lady told me that she's a rock hound and showed me the jumble of stones in the pocket of her backpack. Her dream is to one day get a rock from Mount Everest.

Another girl told me a story about how my rock reminded her of the beach stones she use to collect as a child. Her dad lives on the North Carolina coast, and she used to spend her childhood summers with him. They'd walk the beach together, picking up smooth stones that they called "rubies."

I hope you are enjoying the change of seasons as much as I am and learning new things every day!

What I've been up to...

Reading.

And when I finish reading, I read some more. It's pretty much what I signed up for when I decided to go to grad school for literature, but I have to admit I'm surprised by just how much reading has been required.*

Luckily I have been reading some really great books and interesting essays to accompany them.

And I'm super geeked-out excited about one of the research papers I'll be writing.

Below are some of my sources:

Those top two have great titles: Cheap Amusements and Villains Galore

I've also found a fascinating website and am looking forward to combing through my university's collection of dime novels. Fun (and busy) times ahead!

What are you reading these days? I'd love to hear what you're reading for pleasure (or work/school/whatever).

*This stack only contains the nice-looking books I've been reading. I'll spare you the scads of photocopied essays and giant theory book. Blah.

Library Love

I had forgotten how much I love libraries.

The smells--old paper, leather bindings, canvas covers, dust.

The rows upon rows of shelves--books stacked up from floor to ceiling, the maze-like arrangements of them.

The immense quiet peppered with small sounds--a page turning, the shuffle of feet, a snippet of whispered conversation (so easily overheard).

The feeling of stumbling into this other world, quite unlike any other--turning a corner and seeing nothing but books. It's easy to feel like the only person in a library. It's a place to think, to read, to get lost amongst the vast towers of books.

It feels good to rediscover such a long lost love.

On the topic of libraries, there's a song that mentions libraries, and even though it isn't really about libraries at all, I always think of it as "that library song." It starts off:

Spent a week in a dusty library, waiting for some words to jump at me.

It's Camera Obscura's French Navy--a poppy, catchy tune with a pretty sweet video.
I thought you might just enjoy it.

Back to school

This week I've spent hours upon hours reading in the university library. There is something very soothing about finding a quiet place tucked away behind massive shelves of books. It's like having a world of my very own to fill with whatever I want. I've already had much more reading for class than I ever anticipated, but I take breaks to stretch and crochet. The campus is beautiful and bustling. I've been having lunch outside on the library steps and taking walks to explore the area.

When my eyes were drifting closed after sitting for too long, it was nice to have this little note from the previous owner of this book. It made me smile, thinking of people criticizing the poor hippos. Just leave the hippos to loll about in mud and water, people. They never did anything to you!

And in class yesterday afternoon I chose my desk based on which one had the best quotes scrawled across it. This is the one I picked (and yes, I slyly pulled out my camera and snapped a photo before class).

I hope you've had a lovely week so far and have a wonderful weekend!
I'm definitely glad the weekend is almost here. K and I are planning to do something fun, though we haven't quite figured out what that will be yet. Maybe a nice picnic or a stroll through the park. And we're going to have a movie night. I've already discovered that one perk of being back in school is being able to check out DVDs from the school library. The collection is quite extensive!

School days

Etsy
Buy Handmade

Here is a collection of things to get me in the mood to go back to school.

After three years out in the world, I'm returning to college to pursue my Masters degree in literature. I have all of those same first day of school feelings that I had growing up. I'm nervous and excited, giddy with anticipation and anxiety. I've got my fingers crossed, my pencils sharpened, and my notebook open with crisp, blank pages ready to be filled.

I have a feeling today will be a very good day.
