Nearly every evening for the past couple weeks, I've been visiting our little strawberry patch, a raised bed of 14 plants in our backyard. I planted maybe six or so last year and have happily let them take over the raised bed. Who needs carrots or lettuce? Bring on the berries.
All in all, I've gathered maybe a quart and a half or two of strawberries, some large and many tiny ones, all shot straight through with deep red color. They're sweet right out of the garden, but I haven't been able to resist tucking them into baked goods. I look forward to strawberry season every year because I love strawberry desserts. This year I made a strawberry cake and my annual strawberry cupcakes, along with the messiest strawberry galette, which broke free from its crust and flooded the baking sheet with sticky strawberry syrup that we ate up with spoons.

ReplyDeleteThat strawberry cake has me drooling. Strawberries are one of my favorite fruits. I enjoy strawberries and balsamic vinegar, as well as strawberry vinegrettes.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to have your own strawberries! We pick ours in large batches (from a nearby farm) which means most get frozen for later use. But a couple bowls are for eating fresh, or on ice cream in spring.
ReplyDeleteThough, this year my mom made a batch of strawberry freezer jam. I love it when it doesn't set right. It reminds me of when I was a kid: I wasn't a fan of nearly all breakfast food but I loved yogurt with strawberry freezer jam. I'd push my spoon down on the jam to collect just the liquid and drizzle it on my yogurt. (And I'd also eat oatmeal with maple sugar from Walnut Acres that came in a tiny brown paper bag.)
I know it's too late for strawberries anymore but next year try a batch of freezer jam---it's simple, doesn't take many berries and it's not cooked. :)
